The Belize Prison Project

THE BELIZE PROJECT

Mike Znachko initiated the BELIZE PROJECT in 2004.  He acts as a strategic coordinator in starting and maintaining 12-step recovery groups (Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, and Emotions Anonymous) with inmates at the Belize Central Prison in the country of Belize, Central America. Christian Bible Study is also part of the project. In just three years of operation the privately run Belize Central Prison is becoming a model operation in prison management and rehabilitation in its approach to education, rehabilitation, and recovery of inmates.

In less than three years the reality of “recovering a country” has emerged.

  1. All 1400 inmates ( men, woman, teens) are enrolled and involved in physical, mental, and spiritual programs with over 400 involved in Alcohol (AA), Drug (NA), Emotional (EA, Teen (Alateen) 12 Step Recovery programs. This now includes a full time substance abuse rehab center.

  2. Bible Study programs reinforcing recovery have been introduced.

  3. Over 200 members of the Prison Staff consisting of Counselors, Security Personnel, and prison management have received 16 hours of addiction awareness and recovery training.

  4. Members of Clergy, the National Health Department, the National Drug Department, and church lay persons have been exposed to addiction awareness and recovery training. In 2007 programs are being planned for the Military and Police Department Personnel.

  5. Family and Teen Support for families of addicted individuals are being established in Belize City, the main city of Belize.

  6. Twelve Step Support groups in three major areas of the country have been established with plans for expansion.

  7. Future plans for a Half Way House are being investigated.

The programs within the prison are vital and working. The challenge is to move these programs to communities outside the prison and throughout the country. To accomplish this goal the needs are many. Funds for future trips and all the necessary educational materials are greatly needed. People to assist Mike in fund raising, trips, teaching and training are vital to meet the expanding needs of this ministry.
